What is the Half Fund?

The Half Fund is a mission dedicated to lifting the veil on cancer. It is a first-of-its-kind 501(c)(3) not-for-profit entity dedicated to spreading cancer education and awareness through the financing of commercially viable, mass media appeal projects. These may include films, books, television shows, or music, and will all help to educate people about the realities of a cancer diagnosis and the treatments that follow.  Each artist selected for Half Fund support must choose a partner charity to share a portion of the net profits generated by their project. Remaining net profits are to be returned to the Half Fund, where they will be given away to more artists.

Who qualifies for these grants?

Anyone who looks to foster cancer education, and who is a legal resident of the United States, may qualify for a grant. Our only caveats are that an artistic medium must be used to educate, and the projects must have commercial viability.

How hard will it be to obtain a grant?

Our goal is to find fantastic ideas, as well as projects that are actually feasible. We know that with some grant programs, many people are scared away before they even start. The amount of material that may have to be submitted in an original application process can be intimidating. Our program will work a little differently. The original application process will be straightforward and simple. It will not take a massive amount of jumping through hoops just to get your idea in front of us. If we decide that your idea has merit, then a comprehensive evaluation will be required for applicants.

Who decides which projects that will receive grants?

We are blessed to have an enormous wealth of talent on our volunteer board for the Half Fund. Each person brings unique gifts and perspective to the process of choosing projects that have genuine merit. Each member of our board has an equal vote, and they are doing it for the sole purpose of fostering the belief that art is an amazing and underutilized way to further cancer education.

How much will these grants be worth?

Funds will be allocated on a project-by-project basis. Some will require a nominal amount, while others may require much more. Again, feasibility will be a determining factor as to how much grants will be worth.

How many grants will be made available?

Unfortunately, we are not in a viable position to be able to put a hard and fast number on the amount of grants to be given away on an annual basis. Our starting goal is to help three to five artists in the first year, and if when possible, to grow that number each year.

Why should I support the Half Fund?

There are a number of reasons to support the Half Fund, but here are three that we feel strongly about.

First and foremost, the goal of the fund is to educate the public about the struggles and the triumphs of people battling cancer. It aims to show different perspectives, so that the “flying blind” mentality that accompanies a diagnosis will someday become a thing of the past.

Second, the Half Fund helps to put people to work. We believe in providing a monetary tool to start projects that will not only educate, but also strengthen local economies by creating employment opportunities.

Third, the Half Fund is small enough to see your actual dollars at work. The number of people that will receive grants will be fairly small. Throughout the creative process, we will provide links to recipients for donors to see how their generosity will impact not only the project, but ultimately the fight against cancer.

How can I help the Half Fund?

Giving is easy. Simply click on the “Give” button on the top of any page. We will walk you through the process, and once a transaction is complete, an e-mail will be sent to you, the donor, stating the amount of the donation for tax preparation purposes. If you are uncomfortable donating online, you may also donate via regular mail, preferably certified mail for your protection. As a 501(c)(3) entity, donations to the Half Fund are tax deductible.
